Street lighting accounts for approximately 20% of global electricity consumption. By upgrading to LED bulbs and adding Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity to public lighting systems, cities can cut energy usage by up to half. With cellular connectivity and a centralized management system, lighting can be turned off or dimmed in times of low usage, saving resources.
Intelligent lighting can improve public security. Streetlights can flash to deter individuals from gathering in certain locations. Embedded sensors can detect sounds, such as broken glass or gunshots, then automatically send alerts to the police. Of this, a 10 to 20% savings can be achieved by reducing lighting at dawn or dusk, or in off-peak hours such as between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m.2 Smart systems can also identify lights that are on during the day and switch them off. By analyzing operational data, cities can move to a preventive maintenance model for public lighting infrastructure, to cut service costs and reduce outages.
Smart lights collect real-time data that can be used to make improvements to the municipal area. Data can include traffic speed, noise, or air quality, which is fed back to city planners via a cloud platform.
