Eways is a fast-growing, independent charging operator that is committed to making it easy for people to convert to electric vehicles. Founded in 2015, Eways employs close to 150 professionals and manages a network of more than 25,000 charging stations across Sweden and Denmark. The company’s network of charging stations is doubling annually and will expand into Germany and other Nordic countries in the coming year.
In order to manage and monitor remote EV charging stations, Eways needed a cellular connectivity solution that would work across their current operating region as well as in challenging locations – rural and underground. The EV stations need to be connected to enable load balancing and billing. It also wanted a solution that would work in new geographies as they expand.
The company had previously used a solution with 90% network coverage, but needed one that offered better coverage, especially in underground parking, which proved problematic. It also wanted a solution to cover a larger geographic region to accommodate expansion. It was onerous as technicians had to evaluate network coverage at each station and chose a SIM that that offered a stable connection which meant managing inventories of SIMs across its various operating areas.

Eways selected Sierra Wireless’ Smart Connectivity to connect its EV charging stations across Sweden and Denmark. Smart Connectivity provides a multi-network cellular solution designed to keep assets and machines securely connected anywhere via one worldwide SIM. The patented applet in the SIM offers access to two or more available networks at any location, thus expanding the useful coverage for the deployment.

Eways monitors and manages the EV stations via the AirVantage Management Platform which provides a single interface to manage data consumption, setting alerts to avoid unexpected charges. To further streamline the operations, Eways is considering using the platform’s APIs to integrate connectivity management features into their workflow.
